Escrow or direct payment
Presented as a trade by whoever is asking. It is not one, and this page exists to make the asymmetry obvious.
Through escrow, always
- What you gain
- A contested order becomes a dispute with a binding outcome rather than a loss. The platform cannot move funds alone.
- What you give up
- Settlement is slower, and a vendor may prefer otherwise.
- Suits
- Everyone, without exception, regardless of how long you have dealt with somebody.
Direct, for a discount
- What you gain
- A small saving, sometimes real.
- What you give up
- Every protection at once, permanently, with no process of any kind if it goes wrong.
- Suits
- Nobody. The saving is the bait rather than the point.
Direct, because you have dealt before
- What you gain
- Speed, and the feeling of a relationship.
- What you give up
- The same as above. History is history with an account, and accounts change hands quietly.
- Suits
- Nobody. This is the version that reaches careful people.
The reasons you will hear
| The reason | What it actually is |
|---|---|
| Escrow is having problems | An outage explanation attached to a request that benefits only one side |
| It will be faster | True, and irrelevant. Speed is what you are being sold in exchange for everything. |
| A discount for paying direct | The most effective version, because it feels like a negotiation you won |
| We have dealt before | Accounts change hands, and this request is a standard use of a taken over account |
| My account is being restricted | A reason to hurry attached to a reason to bypass, which is the method in one sentence |
Why it works on careful people
Because it arrives inside a normal interaction rather than out of nowhere. By the time the request appears you have exchanged messages, formed an impression and mentally committed to the transaction. Refusing feels like accusing somebody, and most people would rather carry a small risk than be rude to a stranger who has been pleasant.
What tips it
Nothing. This is the second of the two pages here where the options are not balanced, and the useful part is the script rather than the reasoning. You are declining a category rather than judging a person, which is far easier to do consistently than assessing each explanation on its merits. A genuine vendor will not be surprised, because they know exactly what the request looks like from your side.
